Consisting of a few cottages and farms, the village of Haghpat boasts one of the most beautiful monasteries in Armenia, a title it disputes with that of Sanahin, to which it is close in many ways, and not only by geographical proximity, since only 5 km, as the crow flies, separate the two jewels of Armenian medieval architecture. Situated on a plateau overlooking the river Debet, north-east of Alaverdi-Sanahin, the vast monastic complex of Haghpat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is generally visited in the wake of the Sanahin monastery, following the bed of the river Debet for about 10 km to the sign indicating the monastery, on the right side of the road leading to Akhtala and Noïemberian further north.
