It's hard to resist the charm of this charming town, Portugal's oldest, on the banks of the Rio Lima. Amidst the vineyards, a considerable number of manor houses, quintas and other solares have been transformed into turismo de habitação. The charm of Ponte de Lima is due above all to the conviviality between a population that is still very rural and an aristocracy that maintains the best traditions of Minho. The pretty bridge, the town's emblem, was rebuilt in the 14th century and comprises 15 arches, 5 of which are of Roman origin. It was (and still is) part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
