On the eastern edge of what used to be the considerable pine forest of Leiria (more than 75% of its pine forest was destroyed by fire in 2017), this town came into being thanks to the glass factories that settled there as early asXVIIIe siècleunder the impetus of the Marquis of Pombal and the British industrialist William Stephens. In 1934, it was the working-class town that put up the strongest resistance to the Salazar government. Today, the glassmaking tradition continues, relayed by the production of industrial moulds for injection moulding, exported all over the world. It is always pleasant to stroll through its alleys. The beach is nearby.
