12 km from Leiria. Situated on the left bank of the river Lena, Batalha has a historic centre made up of a few low houses covered with lime. The name and destiny of the town are closely linked to the history of its monastery: Santa Maria da Vitória, a pearl of Gothic architecture, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To get there by car, take the A1/IC2 which links Porto to Lisbon. To visit the main Unesco World Heritage sites in a day, you can take the IC9 expressway, which connects Batalha to Alcobaça and Tomar in about 20 minutes. The same IC9 will take you to Fátima or Nazaré in about 30 minutes.
