Bussaco is visited by all those who are interested in the palace and its forest, an enchanting place. Occupying 105 hectares, its forest is said to be home to more than 700 species of trees. For centuries, this estate was occupied by religious orders. In 1843, when religious orders were abolished throughout Portugal, the forest became state property. The Grand Hotel was built there at the beginning of the 20th century, on top of a series of older buildings. Take a map of the Bussaco forest with the walks before you go (available at the tourist office in Luso). Among them, the Sacred Way and the Way to the Gate of Coimbra and the Lake.
