Located 117 km north of Polokwane, the town was named after a Great Trek leader who explored the area as early as 1836, Louis Trichardt. At that time and until the turn of the century, clashes between settlers and indigenous Venda were very common. The Transvaal Republic was only able to regain control of the Soutpansberg in 1898. Today the town is an important agricultural centre, producing timber, cattle, lychees, mangoes, bananas and nuts. In recent years, the region has been developing because it is on the road to Zimbabwe and in particular on the side of the Soutpansberg massif, "the mountain of the salt lakes", where many lodges are installed
