There's not much to do in this former Bantustan, as it was known during the apartheid era. With a population of around 70,000, Thohoyandou is now a farming town. It attracts poor people from the countryside, and the townships, already numerous, continue to grow. Thohoyandou means "elephant's head" in venda, the name of a king of the Vhavenda kingdom who reigned in the 17th and 18th centuries. Stay at the Pafuri Rivercamp, nestling on the banks of the Mutale River, and enjoy game drives in the Kruger Park.
