Tzaneen owes its development to the railway and the expansion of tropical crops. The first public building of the city was erected in 1924. Because of the high rainfall in the region, no less than 1,143 mm per year, the city appears in a green setting, and sometimes behind a thick veil of mist. "This is our tropical Switzerland," say the many South Africans who visit the region on holiday. Given the mildness of the landscape, it is more like a slightly muggy Auvergne. The sun shines more often in winter, with an average temperature of 26°C, than in summer, when the temperature rises to 33°C.
