Situated in a natural depression, the Polokwane of the Sotho, the regional capital cultivates the memory of Pieter Joubert, the hero of the Battle of Majuba, who is none other than the distant descendant of Pierre Joubert, a Huguenot from Provence who arrived in Cape Town in 1688. It was a group of Voortrekkers, driven out of Schoemansdal by the Venda, who founded the town on 11 November 1884. Polokwane, also known by the Afrikaans name of Pietersburg with its population of over 500,000, was almost encircled by the autonomous Bantu state of Lebowa until 1994. Today it faces an influx of underprivileged people and social tensions are high.
