The stadium, located 5 km from the city of Polokwane, was built in 2009 for the FIFA World Cup at a cost of 1.24 billion rand. It seats 46,000 and its design is inspired by the region's fetish tree, the famous baobab. The idea of renovating the old stadium was quickly abandoned in favor of building a new one. Its name, Peter Mokaba, is a tribute to the leader of the youth league of the ANC, the African National Congress, a socialist party that was outlawed in the 1960s during the apartheid era.
