The village of Sarria is a logical stop on the pilgrimage route. Place of residence of many noble families in the Middle Ages, the Counts and Marquis of Sarria, it keeps many traces of them, especially in its beautiful old quarter, located on the heights. There stands the Torreón, tower of the old fortress of Sarria, 14 metres high, which can be reached by a staircase in the wall. One of the illustrious pilgrims who passed through Sarria was Alfonso IX, the last Galician king who died there in 1230, when he came to thank Santiago for the conquest of Merida.
