After Goudouras, the road that follows the coast and goes inland to the large rural village of Ziros stretches at the foot of cliffs. Before you get there, "No photography!" signs tell you that a military base has taken up residence in the area: NATO has set up an observation base for the entire eastern Mediterranean. If you look up on the road, you will surely see its huge dome that looks like an observatory. Drive on! Despite appearances, if you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of rural Crete today, the village is worth a stop, when in the early evening the main square and its kafeneia come alive. Otherwise..What is there to do in Ziros? Visit the 16th century Agia Paraskevi chapel first of all, it is worth a visit. You can also take a walk through the alleys of the city center that go up from the main street, or approach the few dozens of windmills (similar to those on the Lassithi plateau). Or simply stop by one of the kafeneia, buy some local olive oil (the one from Ziros is particularly appreciated for its taste by the Cretans) or discover, in season, the sultana (a table grape that is also used to make raisins) which is another specialty of the village. To sleep, you will find some simple and comfortable rooms to rent in the village.
