The only attractive spot on the mountain road in the northern foothills of Mount Orno (approx. 1,300 m), Mochlos attracts travellers looking for a quiet, family-friendly holiday destination - which can be reached after 6 km of uninterrupted bends. This small village organized around the small cove formed by its tiny beach (devoured by the waters at high tide) has an intimate side. Five or six taverns have their terrace above the waves where a few fishing boats swing. At the back of the waterfront, there are a few rooms for rent in private houses or small residences built for this purpose. From the small beach one can swim, in calm weather, to the small island of the same name which faces it with a minor Minoan site (2500 BC - excavations are still in progress). The island, previously a small isthmus, was therefore attached to the coast and Mochlos was a small natural harbour which has been continuously exploited since 3000 BC! Be careful, the currents can be strong in some places on the 200 m that link the island to the coast. Many hikers use Mochlos as a base camp.
