19 km east of Sitia and 9 km south of Vaï, this village has become a real small seaside resort in the region. The nearest beach is however more than 2 km away. Palekastro is organized around the central square and the church: from there streets start in a star shape (those going down go towards the sea). In the past there used to be a Minoan city here, but there is not much left of it. Many Greeks come here to rest and bring to Palekastro an atmosphere that is both touristy and authentic. In any case, it is an excellent starting point to explore the wonders of the region (Vaï, Moni Toplou and Zakros are not far away), whatever your means of transport. Palekastro is a small village organized around the central square: the inhabitants meet at the few terraces surrounding the church. Sometimes, in summer, balls are organized on Sundays, it is the occasion of a big party.
