The small mining town of Fluminimaggiore is perched in the mountains. It stretches along the river Mannu, bordered by orange groves and reeds. The town was founded in the 18th century, but it is likely that it corresponds to Metalla the Roman. In piazza Gramsci, you can visit the ethnographic museum housed in an old water mill. The town is also known for its mural painting festival. The famous Su Mannau caves are located nearby and are well worth a visit. One of the oldest caves in the world, the chambers of varying sizes are arranged one behind the other, and one above the other.
