The heart of Leros was relatively unscathed by the destruction of the Second World War, and today you can enjoy three different atmospheres in the villages of Agia Marina (the neoclassical port), Platanos (the neglected heights) and Panteli (the sleepy fishing port). These three villages are dominated by the Apitiki hill, crowned by the majestic medieval kastro. Agia Marina is a pleasant base for your vacation, as you can easily reach the bays of Alinda (to the north), Gourna (to the west) and Panteli (to the south), which contain almost all the island's beaches, as well as almost all the tavernas and hotels of interest. The island's waters are teeming with fish and the soil is fertile: the food on Leros is excellent, with fresh, locally caught or grown produce. The municipality has set up a comprehensive website with all the information you need to organize your stay (www.leros.gr).
