The capital of the island of Kassos is the port of Fri, built in the picturesque bay of Bouka. It's a small village where the curious will find beautiful houses testifying to the past grandeur of an island that counted over 10,000 inhabitants 150 years ago. This is also where you'll find the island's few accommodation options and most of its tavernas and restaurants. The church of St. Spyridon, dedicated to the island's patron saint, overlooks the pretty cove of Bouka. During the day, there's little to disturb the scene, and you can spend hours in the harbour cafés, a necessary break before discovering the rest of the island, including the Agios Giorgios and Agios Mamas monasteries and the surrounding villages: Agia Marina with its charming alleys, Arvanitohori with its pretty central square and cafés including the pleasant Maroukla's, Poli and the ruins of its castle, Panagia and its old-fashioned charm, and finally Emporio, the island's ancient port where you can enjoy a family swim. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, around Fri or on the islet of Armathia. The municipality has developed a website dedicated to tourism. You'll find plenty of information to help you plan your trip to Kassos: kasos.gr. The airport is just 2 km from Fri. Olympic Air and Sky Express regularly connect Kassos with Athens and Rhodes (1h20). The flight to Rhodes makes a stopover in Karpathos on the way: the flight from Kassos to Karpathos will surely be one of the shortest flights you'll ever make. Few ferries serve the island, which benefits from the same maritime connections as its neighbor Karpathos.
