Appearing in the 7th century BC as Neapolis, Kavala served as a port for Philippi in antiquity. In particular, it welcomed Saint Paul in 49 (he pronounced the Epistle to the Philippians) and saw the birth, in 1769, of the one who would become the famous pasha of Egypt: Mehmet Ali. Its name comes from "horse", as Kavala was used as a post office horse relay on the road to Istanbul. Built in a semi-circle around its port, the city is overlooked by a citadel, a rare vestige of the Ottoman era that is worth the detour! Around its port, strolling along the quays, you will come across the cosmopolitan population who live to the gentle rhythm of the fishing boats, and perhaps you will be tempted by a trip to Thassos, opposite Kavala?
