BIRTHPLACE OF MÉHÉMET ALI

Kavala is the birthplace of Mehemet Ali, the founder of modern Egypt, viceroy of Egypt from 1805 to 1849. You can visit his house, built in Ottoman style and carefully restored. A film at the entrance retraces the life of Méhémet Ali. Inquire here to visit the Imaret, an oriental-style building that once housed a Koranic school and a hospice for the poor, now transformed into a palace - a tour is organized every day by a guide (in English).
