ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Opened in 1964, this museum traces the history of eastern Macedonia and its neighbour Thrace through numerous objects, statuettes and documents. Objects from the surrounding sites of Neapolis and Amphipolis, as well as the remains of the Parthenos temple that was in the upper city, at the current location of Mehemet Ali's residence, can be seen there. References to the goddess Parthenos, the protective goddess of Neapolis, and her sanctuary, the magnificent building of the ancient city, occupy an important place in the museum.
