Philippi is a foundation of the King of Macedonia, Philip II, on the site of the Thasian colony of Crenides, on the southern foothills of Mount Orbelos. An important stage of the via Egnatia, and although the town has always remained modest in size, Philippi has a privileged place in history due to two major events. It hosted the Battle of Philippi, which led to the victory of Julius Caesar's heirs under its walls in October 42 BC. And, above all, we owe him the Pauline preaching in 49 or 50, which led to the writing of the Epistle to the Philippians in the New Testament.
