This park was originally created in 1962 under the name of Vihren National Park and was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. Covering 27 000 ha, this protected area is from 1 008 m to 2 914 m altitude. The geography of the park is heterogeneous with majestic rocky peaks, three of which above 2 900 m, 176 natural lakes and many rivers and springs flowing to green valleys. The Pic peak, the most beautiful and the highest peak of the park at 2 914 m is the second highest summit in Bulgaria.The fauna and flora are particularly rich and varied: nearly 1 300 plant species are present in this territory, 50 of which are endemic and over 2 300 animal species, the invertebrates constituting the most present group. Edelweiss and concolore fir represent the symbols of this mountain.Among vertebrate species, many of which are protected, approximately 160 species of birds and 45 mammal species, including the brown bear, wolf, chamois, wild goats, biches, and wild deer and cats, have been identified. With luck you can see a fox, a deer or an eagle.The park also has several historical monuments.On a surface of 4 000 ha, the park is criss-crossed by many well-marked trails that will delight all walkers at all levels: a network of 13 major trails and 17 secondary trails connecting 8 chalets and 5 shelters.
