The most characteristic monument of Kavala is this large aqueduct, known as the "Kamares" (arch), with a length of 270 m and a maximum height of 25 m. It has retained its beauty and grandeur and remains a landmark of the city. The aqueduct, well preserved and majestic, was built at the time of Suleiman the Magnificent in the 19th century. Until 1911, the aqueduct was used to supply the city with water from Mount Pangaion. It is believed that there was a Roman aqueduct at the same place, the ruins of which served as a foundation.
