Arta is the second largest city in Epirus after Ioannina. The quiet streets, some lively neighbourhoods, beautiful Byzantine remains and the bridge with its tragic past are all reasons to make a short stop here. Founded in the 7th century BC by the Corinthians, it was then called Ambracia. Around 295 BC, the city acquired great political importance as it became the capital of the king of Epirus, Pyrrhos. Under Byzantine rule, the city was very prosperous. In 1205, it became the capital of the despotate of Epirus, an independent state. In 1449 it was taken by the Ottomans, and was not liberated until 1881. Getting there. Accessible by bus (www.ktelartas.gr).
