Located 18 km northeast of Nevşehir, at the foot of a range of hills, the village is crossed by the longest river in Anatolia, the Kızılırmak, whose red waters pour out a mud used for pottery. Famous for its workshops, this very active village does not live only from tourism. Avanos is a good starting point for excursions and hikes. The village is perched on the heights and descends to the river. On the other side of the river, there is a market on Friday. The artisans make their pottery by hand, using a technique from the time of the Hittites, dating back to the second millennium B.C. This ancestral art is passed on from father to son. Most of the men in the village have mastered pottery. You can see them at work in the workshops and some even offer courses. Beware of stores "traps for tourists" and their exorbitant prices. Avanos is a regional wine town and is twinned with Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Burgundy vineyards of France.
