85 km south of Nevşehir, the city lies at an altitude of 1,200 meters on the Anatolian plateau, eastern side of the central steppe. Niğde consists of an upper and a lower city. There is an oasis all around that brings some greenery to the city in a rather arid region. Not much visited, Niğde, with its few monuments and citadel, is well placed to visit the unmissable Eski Gümüşler Monastery. Also a good starting point for hiking and trekking in the Taurus. Niğde can be a day trip from Cappadocia. The hill on which the citadel was built is paramount. This one allowed to control the comings and goings on the trade and invasion routes. A road, through the Cilician Piles of Taurus, culminates at 3,734 meters above sea level and connects Cilicia to Cappadocia.
