Located at the crossroads of the roads from Konya and Ankara, Aksaray "the White Palace" is a stopover town for those who want to visit the beautiful Ihlara or Güzelyurt valley. The Arab traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited in the 14th century, said that Aksaray was "a beautiful city, surrounded by waterways and gardens". After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, some of the inhabitants moved to the former Byzantine capital and founded the district of the same name. Except for its central square, Aksaray has lost its charm. Intense urbanization has taken a heavy toll. But a walk in the center and along the river remains pleasant.
