A bustling town of over 200,000 inhabitants, it is a compulsory transit point for the port of Itungi. There is an agency for the MV Songea and MV Iringa. Four-wheel drive vehicles provide a link to the pier. They leave when they are full and never miss the departure of the boats. Other 4x4s go as far as Ipinda, 15 km away (to reach Tukuyu and the Masoko crater lake), and sometimes even as far as Matema, 40 km away. Kyela is surrounded by rice fields as the Kiwira, Lufilyo, Mbaka and Songwe rivers flow into the lake here. Cocoa, beans, cashew nuts and bananas are also produced here
