Matema is 130 km from Mbeya. North of Lake Nyassa, Matema Beach is reputed to be the most beautiful beach in the region, with the Livingstone Mountains at 2,000 m in the background. It's a sleepy fishing village on the shores of the lake, with a few hotels offering canoeing, cultural excursions and mountain hikes. People come here to lose themselves in an unspoilt natural environment. Women have been making pottery here for centuries, and the small handicraft shops offer a wealth of beautiful objects. The chaotic track to Matema passes through tea and banana plantations and rainforest.
