Chitipa (formerly known as Fort Hill) is one of the most remote towns in Malawi. Located in the far northwest of the country, it borders Zambia and Tanzania. There is a bank, a hospital and a small supermarket for supplies. The enchanting road to Karonga leads through the beautiful hills of Misuku where farmers grow coffee and harvest honey. The forests are inhabited by monkeys and a hundred endemic bird species have been recorded. The linguistic wealth of this district is impressive: 19 dialects are spoken. The inhabitants of Chitipa are proud of this heritage.
