Karonga is the main gateway to Malawi for those from Tanzania and is the most important city in the far north of the country. Established in 1883, it played a major role in the fight against slavery and during the First World War (close to Tanzania then under German occupation). Its museum also recalls its prehistoric past, with the rich discoveries that have been made around Karonga.Today, it enjoys a certain dynamism: it is the main road junction with the northern neighbour and the opening of a uranium mine 40 kilometres west of the city heralds a new destiny.
