The town is an important economic centre for the region, and is the centre of a number of agricultural administrations. Even though the temperatures are very low in winter and it is freezing, everything grows in the area: rain and sunshine are abundant throughout the year and the soil of volcanic origin is extremely fertile. Artemisa annua plants, for example, grow up to 13 m high. This plant has been used for 4,000 years in Southeast Asia to fight malaria. But here it is the only place in the world where it reaches such a height. Njombe can be the starting point for beautiful mountain hikes in some of the least known and visited places in the country. A road runs west from the town towards Tukuyu and crosses a mountain reef flirting with 3,000m: to the north of the road, the Kipengere Mountains and the Kitulo Plateau; to the south, the Livingstone Mountains, which overlook Lake Nyasa
