This cool town, perched on the Rungwe highlands at an altitude of 1,500 m, has a population of around 50,000. It's not interesting in itself, but it can be a good starting point for excursions, as the volcanic region is absolutely magnificent and also fertile: as far as the eye can see, tea plantations are still green, as these high plateaus are situated between 1,800 and 2,400 m above sea level. Tukuyu has the particularity of having been destroyed twice in a row by an earthquake, in 1910 and 1919. Since then, nothing. Excursions in the region are exceptional, in particular to the Masoko and Ngozi volcano lakes, and the Kaporogwe waterfall.
