Stone Town is the historic and touristy part of the island's capital, with a population of around 25,000. It is part of a whole, Zanzibar Town, whose new part, called Ngambo, is home to some 150,000 people. The old town is therefore quite small and can be visited on foot, as it is made up of labyrinthine, pedestrian streets. It's worth visiting for its authentic atmosphere, the call of the muezzins at sunset, the clusters of children on their way home from school and its bustling market from morning to night. Come and discover the many carved doors that bear witness to the splendor of yesteryear, the elaborate balconies, openwork loggias and verandas. Don't miss a Taarab concert, a good meal, a visit to the old town and its museum dedicated to the memory of slavery - Zanzibar was the largest trading center in the Middle East.
