12 km south-west of Unguja (Zanzibar's main island), Chumbe Island has been a private protected area since 1994. Tanzania's first marine park, it is managed by Chicop (Chumbe Island Coral Park), which includes an ecolodge. The islet is recognized by its 1904 lighthouse, which ferries pass in front of. This ecotourism complex is one of the few in Africa to be totally ecological: solar electricity, compost toilets, recycled and reused rainwater... The underwater world is particularly rich. Dolphins can be spotted and diving is of the highest quality. Boat included in day tour or overnight stay.
