Fumba is a small village at the southern tip of Zanzibar, at the end of the eponymous peninsula, about 20 km from Stone Town. It's from here that the boats for the Safari Blue depart, the famous excursion organized mainly from Stone Town, but also from Pajé, Jambiani or Kiwengwa. From the beach, you can admire the whole of Menai Bay, a marine conservation area that can be visited by snorkeling. A trip in a dhow (traditional boat), a picnic lunch with grilled seafood and fish, and a swim on a sandbank are all part of the classic day's excursion. For those who want to take a cab to the beach on their own, the fishermen offer a tour directly to the beach. This is rare, however, as the trip from Stone Town is usually negotiated with the return trip included. Apart from the hordes of tourists who arrive here for the famous excursion, the village is very quiet and friendly. A new Fumba Town has sprung up. It features luxury apartments and family homes with shopping malls, restaurants, doctors, children's playgrounds, parking, terraces and streets, to attract wealthy residents who want to live up to Western standards of luxury. The project is pharaonic and mainly attracts customers from the Middle East. More information at www.fumba.town
