The archaeological site of Unguja Ukuu, where the first known town on the island was located, was abandoned in the 10th century. This site is known thanks to Mohammed wa Joka, a former notable of the island who lived here until his 80th birthday, celebrated in 1920. This character was often named in local legends. He was a diviner and was able to make the village of Unguja Ukuu invisible to enemies. Thanks to his gift, he could also see who was stealing coconuts from his trees, cure incurable diseases, find lost children, dissolve bad spells... various miracles that have remained in the writings and memories.
