The village is also home to one of the island's oldest Afro-Shirazian mosques, dating back to the 12th century. The site was chosen by the British as a transmission center for East Africa during the Second World War: antennas were installed on the baobab tree near the shore. The waters of Kizimkazi are reputed to be home to around 200 dolphins in Menai Bay. The success of the Dolphin Tour - during which you can swim with the dolphins - has had repercussions, as they have become rarer, but today they are returning in numbers as tourists focus on the Mnemba excursion, which also offers this. We advise you to do the snorkeling trip around Pungume Island from Kizimkazi, or even to combine it with the dolphins (very early in the morning), but it makes for a long day. Be aware that the sea here is full of coral, not ideal for swimming. The coral reef is non-existent, so you're soon out in the open sea, which is where you'll find the dolphins, and from July to September, the whales (humpback and blue). If you're lucky, you might even see them jumping over the horizon! The village is very lively and friendly, with majestic baobab trees that give it a certain cachet. In recent years, a number of large resorts have set up here, some with decks on stilts that allow bathing at high tide with a ladder. Kizimkazi is undergoing real development. We recommend hotels with swimming pools on this rocky stretch of coast.
