19 km south of Tanga, you can visit the fishing port of Tongoni and the nearby ruins of the ancient city that flourished ten centuries ago. It was here that Vasco da Gama landed in 1498 to become the first European to set foot on Tanzanian soil. You can get there by leaving the main track north of Tongoni, at the fork in the road marked by a sign, to take a smaller track to the left, for 2 km. Then you cross the schoolyard to reach the ruins directly. The archaeological site includes about 40 tombs and, above all, the remains of a beautiful 14th century mosque with a coral mihrab.
