Mtende is a small, authentic village that has remained off the beaten tourist track. But for some years now, it has been on the road to the "secret beach", a beach cut into the coral rocks that is revealed at low tide and disappears under the waves pounding the rocks at high tide. New lodges and a restaurant have sprung up on this coastline, planted with an immense baobab forest and inhabited by red colobus monkeys. Find out about tide times before you go. As you pass through the village, you can't miss the enormous baobab tree, which you can climb up via a staircase on its side (for US$1) and take photos.
