This island off the coast of Stone Town was the base of the first telegraph cable linking Zanzibar to South Africa, the Seychelles and Aden (in Yemen) during the cutting-edge British colonial era. The station was linked to Stone Town by an old building, now replaced by the Serena Inn. Bawe Island is renowned for its underwater reefs, which are ideal for snorkeling (the most beautiful around Stone Town), and boasts a hotel with around 15 bungalows. Don't hesitate to organize a low-cost snorkelling trip with the fishermen from Stone Town harbour, coupled with a break at the Nakupenda sandbank.
