Kiwengwa is the big village on this central east coast, with a fairly concentrated center. Along the white sandy beach are a number of luxury resorts that have chosen this sublime spot for its exclusivity. Indeed, they are isolated from the village itself, focusing on privacy and tranquility and on the services on offer (kids' club, multiple restaurants, full board, plethora of activities, spa...). The beach here is sea urchin-free and perfect for swimming (as at Pwani and Pongwe, but unlike Matemwe further north) but also for kitesurfing. The Melia is really huge, the biggest of the resorts. Smaller, alternative structures have opened in recent years, and Kiwengwa is home to a host of new local restaurants. There's even a supermarket open 24/7! On the beach, you can't get enough of the spectacle of fishermen heading out to sea, women gathering shellfish and Massai people dressed in bright red against the blue of the lagoon..
