The nature reserve of Kaliakra (690 ha) shelters 240 wild species. Cape Kaliakra marks a break between the rugged south coast and the flatter north. This promontory raised on cliffs plunging into the sea is one of the most picturesque sites of the coast. This strategic location has been coveted since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, when the Turks took the area, forty Bulgarian women threw themselves off the cliff to escape. From here, it is easy to see dolphins in the open sea and cormorants. A small museum in a cave tells the history of the cape, and shows an exhibition about the naval defeat of the Turks in 1791.
