The most important city of Kenting National Park, on the road to Kaohsiung - it is an administrative center where you can find banks and a post office - Hengchun is also the only city on the island where the four city gates have remained standing. Built in 1879, these gates were part of the city's fortifications that protected the villagers from barbarian invasions. Today, although the city is growing thanks to an ever-increasing number of tourists, it remains much more peaceful and quiet than Kenting. Many artists have made Hengchun their home, making it the cultural centre of the south. It is also a good starting point to visit the national park.
