In the 8th century AD, Chiang Khong was first an independent city. It then passed successively under the territorial domination of Chiang Rai, then Chiang Saen and finally Nan. Some 60 km from Chiang Saen, it is a trading center with the tribes of the region and with Houay Xai, in Laos, on the other side of the Mekong. It's easy to cross the border here (by light boat or ferry) and continue your journey in Laos, either downstream along the Mekong to Luang Prabang (with an intermediate stop at Pakbeng), or upstream by road to the north-east, towards Luang Nam Tha.
