Originally, San Carlos de Bariloche (more commonly known as Bariloche) was a small village created by German and Swiss German emigrants. Tradition reports that Carlos Wiederhold, a German-Chilean entrepreneur, built the first house in 1895. Everything can be explained: the alpine atmosphere, the wooden chalets, the national capital of chocolate... Bariloche displays European attributes in the heart of the Andean landscape. On the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapí, in the summer you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the national park, and in the winter the city becomes the most famous ski resort on the South American continent. Today, for Argentines (and more and more for foreigners) it is a tourist star. The amenities offered by the city and its very attractive environment ensure it is a great place on the Patagonian road or for a family stay. While foreign travelers come to enjoy the wonderful views and various excursions, national tourism is more of a farándula type (the jet-set porteña, as it is called in Buenos Aires). For many, Bariloche is a destination that cannot be ignored; indeed, it can be a good transition between southern Patagonia and a possible return to Buenos Aires. In spite of the good atmosphere of the city, don't expect a small corner of wild paradise, the city keeps expanding and, after having colonized the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapí, it continues its expansion on the heights where nature then seems far away. It must be admitted that the site is superb and one can imagine it without all these constructions.
