About 17,000 inhabitants. Until 14 CE, the port of the former Roman Nauportus was prosperous. In the Middle Ages, Vrhnika became an important center for trade with Venice, the Vipava valley and the Karst. From the second half of the 19th century, Vrhnika went into decline with the opening of the Vienna-Trieste line, which bypassed the town. Today, the town boasts a leather industry and a wealth of eateries, making it a lively place on summer evenings. As you walk through the town, you'll notice the statue of the great writer Ivan Cankar, a native of Vrhnika.
