The municipality has 11,350 inhabitants spread over 65 villages. A natural phenomenon awaits you to the south of Cerknica, and one that has intrigued people since ancient times. It's a 26 km² lake with a depth of just ten meters. In summer, this natural curiosity is transformed into immense meadows mown by farmers, and tourists cry farce. The lake is actually a polje (a karst pit) that receives water from the Javorniki mountain and the Bloke plateau. This water then rushes into the karst subsoil. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, as all the water cannot infiltrate, it gushes back out. The lake then forms.
