Ilha Grande is the largest island in the bay of Angra dos Reis. For nature lovers, this nature reserve is a veritable ecological paradise. There are no cars on the island, and you can get around by boat or on foot. 95% of the original forest has been preserved. The seabed is incomparably beautiful and rich in shipwrecks. Accessible by boat from Mangaratiba, Conceição de Jacareí or Angra dos Reis, this ecological sanctuary boasts numerous beaches. Some are tranquil, with transparent waters; others, lined with palm trees and choppy waves, are frequented by surfers.Spend your days lazing on the beaches, sailing on boats offering tours of the island or hiking. Trails link the beaches to each other, or wind through the jungle. You can walk to the magnificent Lopes Mendes beach, one of the most beautiful in Brazil and the wildest on the island. From the Papagayo peak, the highest point on the island at 900 metres, you can enjoy a magnificent 360° view of the surrounding area. Nature-lovers can take a 5-day trek around the island with a guide. In Abraão, the island's main gateway, Cariocas, Paulistas and tourists (mostly Argentinians) rub shoulders with fishermen. A much sought-after spot for parties and weekends, it's a long way from mass tourism. In paradise, prices are always a little high, of course. In August and September, the sometimes rough seas make access to Ilha Grande difficult.
