Renowned for its Mallorcan cuisine, Algaida is the mini-capital of a large fig-growing region. Its name derives from the Arabic al-gaida, meaning "the base", as during the period of Arab domination, the village was home to large farms called al-gaida. Today's village has grown up around the beautiful Gothic church (1435), enriched by Baroque additions, and although until the last century it lived on livestock and agriculture, it is now mainly known for its glassmaking. Mallorcans frequent the village mainly at weekends, enjoying lunch in the dozen or so restaurants along the way.
